LOVE FLIES
By: Vie Setsuna
"What a beautiful day…!!", Mana opened the window, stretched his hands, looked out of the window and inhaled a huge amount of fresh air. His roommate, Gackt, threw a tennis ball to his back. "Don't be that damn poetic, doll!", he said. "Doll" was Mana's cute name given by Gackt, due to his girly figure and behavior.
Mana turned his face to Gackt and smiled. "Good morning, Gacchan. Sweet dream? Oh no, I guessed you had a bad dream last night, so in this beautiful morning, you don't look even alive. Hihihi…", Mana talked unstoppably, like a parrot.
Instead of answering, Gackt threw his pillow to Mana's face. "Eat this, parrot" he said meanly.
"Oh, I'm right! Gacchan had a bad dream last night, so he's so bad today…", he played Gackt around. Then he remembered something.
"Mmm..do you know the latest news, Gacchan? There will be a new student in our class today. Sounds interesting, doesn't it?", he said.
Gackt took his towel and started to walk to the bathroom. "So what?", he replied plainly, "I don't give a damn."
"Ah..bad Gacchan…behave well, please? Who knows he'll be our bestfriend?", Mana answered with enthusiasm.
Gackt, who almost closed the bathroom's door, opened it wider and looked at Mana. "My bestfriend is only YOU, baka-Mana", he said.
Mana ran to Gackt. "Oooh…This is my lovely Gacchan…", he screamed and tried to reach Gackt, but Gackt had closed the door fast before.
Mana walked to the window and sat on it with chin on his hand, thought of his friend, Gackt. 'He's still the same like last year..', Mana thought. Last year Gackt was also a new student, and however his seniors didn't like him. They said that they hate his eyes, which looked as if challenging them. They often did terror to him, hit him, even one day they slipped his foot when he was in the canteen, causing his food all poured onto the floor. All his classmates didn't have such bravery to fight them. To make things worse, none of them tried to be his friends, except Mana. He was in the same room with Gackt in the dorm, and he knew how nice Gackt actually was, behind his cynical attitude. The seniors didn't see Mana as their enemy, because they think a weird boy like Gackt should have a friend as weird as he was. And they think Mana was also weird, because he looked too girly for a boy.
After having a breakfast, Mana and Gackt walked to their classroom, 2-B classroom. It was a winter day, but that day wasn't as cold as usual, although the sun didn't show its face. Before starting class, their Mathematic teacher, Megumi-sensei, announced that there would be a new student in that class. Since the school was only for boys, which meant that the newbie would be a boy too, all students in the class just gave a little respond. Then Megumi-sensei called the new student to come in. All boys in that class, except Gackt, got surprised when they looked at the new student. He wasn't tall, but his body was shaped well. He had a cute face, almost looked like a girl. Although he had his hair short-cut, he still looked too cute for a boy. Some boys in that class made noise by yelling, "Woo… what a pretty boy…" -the same comment given to Mana when he moved to that school--. The boy only smiled, a bit forced it, then introduced himself to the entire class as Hyde Takarai, an American-born Japanese boy. He moved to Japan because his father moved his company there, and he said he would be glad if everyone wanted to make friends with him.
Sensei told Hyde to sit behind Mana and Gackt. When he passed Gackt's desk, he heard Gackt commented, "Sweet mouth, huh?" and Hyde felt a bit annoyed. Mana cleared the situation by talking with him, the newbie.
"Hello, my name is Mana. Nice to see you. In which room will you be put?", as usual, Mana talked lightning-speed.
Hyde was very glad to get such friendly respond. "Um.. in room 302, I guess", he said.
"Oh, it's right underneath our room, Gacchan!", Mana exclaimed happily. "So you'll be with Toshiya, right? Hm.. I advised you not to get very close to him", Mana said, almost in whisper.
It seemed like he knew everything about this school and all its students, Hyde thought.
Mana continued his "news", "Toshiya, or usually called Totchi, is the "pretty boy" from 2-A class, and it seems he is interested in boys.. umm.. you know…what…gay. Last year he "shot" my deskmate and roommate, Gacchan, but Gacchan refused him". He explained all things during Megumi-sensei's subject.
Gackt turned Mana's head to face him. "Don't spread it, you parrot!", he said.
Hyde laughed a little bit loud, looking that Gackt's face turned red when he said to Mana not to spread the news of Totchi shot him.
Megumi-sensei, knowing that there were some students who didn't follow the class seriously, sent the three of them outside, plus gave them sweeps, special ones to clean the snow. She punished them to clean the front yard. Mana protested, "Sensei, it's very cold outside! How come you say that we have to sweep the yard?"
Megumi-sensei only gave a little smile. "Well, guys, if you have so much spare time to chat, why don't you make your spare time more beneficial, by sweeping the yard, maybe?", she said.
Mana still protested, "But, Sensei…" but his words was cut by Megumi-sensei's "And for you, Mana, I think you'll be glad that by being out of class, you can talk more to Hyde, to know him better, right?"
Mana didn't protest anymore, because he knew that Gumi-Gumi sensei (that's his "cute" name for her) was such a strict teacher.
And so the three of them walked outside the class heading for the yard. The yard was covered by thick layers of snow, but the weather wasn't as cold as they thought. They were kind of enjoyed their work. Mana looked happy, because he could take the chance to know his new friend better. They two came into a conversation, which Gackt guessed interesting. But he was too shy to get into them, recalled his cynical comment to Hyde. However, Hyde seemed to know it, so he came to Gackt and tried to make a conversation. Then Gackt found that Hyde was a very attractive boy. Not only good at making jokes, but he also knew everything Gackt asked him. Actually, Gackt just intended to test him. He wanted to know if Hyde was really that good or he was just a pretty-airhead-boy. Gackt was surprised, knowing that Hyde's knowledge were almost as much as his.
Started from that day, he didn't saw Hyde half-eyed. He saluted him for had making so many friends in his first few days. He was really attractive and sweet, so the seniors didn't take him as the next "target". Hyde often came to Mana & Gackt's room, just to talk or play video games. Even one day he cooked together with Mana. Gackt, who saw them in the kitchen wearing aprons, couldn't help laughing. He thought they were very cute wearing such clothes. The two boys ran to chase him, for had making them into jokes. Gackt ran around the dorm, with Mana & Hyde -still wearing aprons- chasing after him, and all boys in the dorm were all amazed. What on earth was happening then? Gackt looked cheerful, and deep in his heart secretly he thanked God he had such friends now.
Sometimes when the night came and he was all alone, he remembered his unhappy childhood, when he was only allowed to play piano. His mother didn't allow him to play with his friends, because she thought it was unnecessary. Little Gackt tried his best to make his parents proud of him, but things didn't go the way he expected them to. He began to disbelieve his parents from the day he said he was leaded by a ghost needed his help, to leave his house. His parents and relatives thought that it was only his imagination, or illusion. Little Gackt was really upset, scared, and stressed, and because of that his parents sent him to a mental hospital. Some times later, after struggling hard, he succeded to pass the difficult moment. He grew up as a lonesome boy, sometimes cynical and egoist. But he was also tough, hardworking, and very perfectionist. That was why he became number one student in his class now, only needed a month to beat the previous number one student. He became the golden child of their teachers, although he didn't think that he did all for the teachers. He felt that he just did what he could do.
Winter passed, and slowly flowers and seeds grew, it's the sign of spring. However, Hyde didn't look well by the coming of spring. When the class had physical exercise, he often fainted. His skin turned red and he felt a pain. Of course all of his friends were confused, because during winter, he always looked well. But Hyde said that he was OK, and told the possibility that he had an allergic of flower seeds that were flown by the wind. Gackt and Mana were still anxious, because Hyde looked so painful. One day he collapsed again, and their teacher sent him to take a rest in his dorm. Gackt and Mana accompanied him to go to his dorm. They wanted to accompany him until his pain vanish, but Hyde said he was OK, so they left him.
After class was off, Gackt went alone to Hyde's room. Mana didn't join in, because he had a drama exercise in his club. Gackt opened the door without making any sound, and was frozen at the sight. Hyde sat by the window. His shoulders shook, and Gackt heard him crying. Gackt stepped inside the room carefully and came to him.
