It would help if you understand the descriptions in the insert of the DVD.
Here's a rough translation:
EVERGREEN
This song, being the first single, also acts as the beginning of the story.
The theme of the song is the death of a friend, which happened when the song was being composed.
The guitar that HYDE uses, which is also the symbol of ROENTGEN, is the Gibson Type-0.
All the songs in ROENTGEN were written with this guitar.
The unlocked birdcage, which ties together the whole one-shot imagery (of the PV), represents our human hearts, which is filled with thoughts of "it is always possible to escape to the outside."
Director: Suguru Takeuchi
(tp kalo liat pv ini perasaan kaya silvester ma tweety, hyde na tweety, gakuto jd silvester na nyan hahhaa )
ANGEL'S TALE
This second single was written as an ideal Christmas song suitable for playing in churches.
This work shows beautiful imagery of the night gradually moving towards dawn.
Director: Suguru Takeuchi
HYDE wrote the script to ROENTGEN STORIES, and he also produced the drawings of the imageries he wanted to show.
The imageries that link each song together were shot during and after the shooting of each PV, and they were never released before.
SHALLOW SLEEP
People dream when they fall into a shallow sleep.
This third single shows the lost feelings of one awakening, still immersed in the lingering scents of a dream.
HYDE left everything in the PV up to Director Nikai except the instructions of showing imageries of his dream during his fall (from the church top).
The coffin of the limited edition of the single and other items from the other three PVs are used in the imageries created. It shows an illusionary dream, and it is a work to show off the skills of the director.
Director: Ken Nikai
SECRET LETTERS
This ROENTGEN song summarizes Anne's conditions from "The Diary of Anne Frank" up until she was taken by the Nazis. "SECRET LETTERS" refer to her diary.
These imageries, shot and made to act as the ending to ROENTGEN STORIES and to link everything together, show the happiness acquired from being able to be liberated when the other one inside onself has died.
And the story links back to the first song, EVERGREEN, and it continues forever......
-------------
I think HYDE himself can explain the meaning better than anyone else. From HYDE's own words in R&R Newsmaker (Nov/2004):
"For example, its something like abandoning a past self, or something like another person inside you has died. It's like people with double personalities obtaining freedom from the death of a part (the other personality?) of them. I wanted to show such meanings. The birdcage also represents the same thing. The door of the birdcage is left open. You can come out, but you don't. It shows the closing of the heart. There are people who hate their jobs.
It's better for them if they quit, but they just can't decide. There are people who think, "I can't allow myself to think of quitting this job and finding another better one," and they die with these thoughts. I want to show something like these with the birdcage. It's really similar, I think that there are things inside yourself, a lot of things that exist within yourself that prevents you from being free. Maybe it's something close to a trauma. For example, you have strict parents, and you have to go to college. But deep inside you really don't want to go. In that example, if you kill the "good child" that you show to your parents, you'll be free. I want to show something like this. From the death of the other one within myself, I obtain freedom."
I think these kind of show the concept and idea behind the whole thing. Hope they help.
